Creating a Forum Part 4 - Getting Members

This is the forth part of the creating a forum series. Today we will be focusing in one of hardest parts of building a forum: getting members!!!

Most forums will fail if they can’t manage to attract new and active members. So one of the first things a webmaster needs to start thinking is how they will bring new members?

First Step: Create Content!

You have just configured your forum, things look real nice, but it is all very empty…

This is where you need to start your posting Frenzy! That’s right. You will need to create relevant and decent topics so that new visitors can see that your forum actually has something to show…. Don’t be lazy… I promise you it is fun. ;) Just remember this little tip:

Don’t leave any board empty. Create content on each board your forum has. Users don’t like to see empty boards.

After that, you will have a few dozens of new topics, but there is no one responding to them. There are no discussions going on, there is no user interactivity!

What can you do to fix this? You have 4 choices:

Off for a few days

First let me say that It seems that feedburner is forgetting to count rss readers from google reader… Again!!!

Anyway my friends, it is time for me to take some time to rest and relax, so i will be off for a few days. I need to get some decent tan… ;)

Don’t worry :p I will try to write one or two articles for you to read next week.

So, we are in the middle of the month (damn days pass fast ), and i think this is the right opportunity to announce that there will be some changes in the advertising prices.

New advertising prices:

So if you want to take advantage of the really cheap prices practiced here, this is the right time to book them, for one month or more.

So until the end of the month you will be able to buy advertising at the following prices:

125×125 banner ad: $5/month  (next price will be $10);

Paid reviews and links are under analysis to increase the price or not.

Here are some statistics:

OiOpublisher stats tracker shows, from last 30 days, a combined total of:

Clicks: 149

Impressions: 25158

CTR: 0.592%

Effective CPM: 0.029 USD

Effective CPC: 0.007 USD

i would say that anouncing at bloggervenue.com has a very low CPC. ;)

Of course, these stats are from all advertising campaigns running here. Individual stats may show different results.

So long! it is time to party!!! :D Have fun! ;)

Creating a forum part 3 - Choosing a Theme to use

After configuring our forum, the next step is choosing the right theme. One of the things that i like in SMF is the number of free and quality themes around and it is so easy to install them.

Now that you are looking for a theme, you must remind yourself that the majority of mods are configured to run on the Default SMF theme. IF you choose a different one to use, then you will need to do some edits in your theme files to make the mods work. Hopefully, SMF 2.0 final will take care of this for you (probably it won’t but im still hoping lol).

You can stick with the Default theme for a while. You will be alright. But we want to make things a bit more appealing.

Where can i find themes for my smf forum?

The Top 100 blogs Update

In case you don’t know, almost 2 weeks ago i decided to create a top 100 blog that have up to 1000 Rss subscribers.

After this time, i decided to do a little update.

Blogs have been added regularly, some submitted by me others sent to my email. We have 63 blogs so far, so it is no quite a top 100, but we will reach it soon. :)

Some blogs have been rejected because they don’t show exactly how many subscribers they have. So if you are interested in getting added in this top list then you should give a way that i can verify the amount of subscribers your blog has.

After 2 weeks the Top 10 blogs are:

Get More With Less

All bloggers in their everyday blogging activity, which involves reading, commenting in other blogs, researching for new material, will eventually write a new post.

Now, a common mistake that i see a lot of times, in my opinion, is that some bloggers tend to write big articles. When i say big, i mean 1000+ words articles. I don’t know about you, but im not very fond of big articles. I mean, i get tired reading all that stuff, specially if the blogger does not know how to captivate the readers.

Im no angel here. I have some posts, specially the recent creating a forum series(part 1 and part 2), that reach 1000 words.

Blog Visitors are like newspaper readers. They look for the headlines and potentially for the first lines to get a global picture of what it’s about, and if they find it useful they will read it. But even so, they will jump paragraphs!

We want our visitors to completely read our posts, but lets face it. If we write to much we will loose them.

So how can we get more with less?

After thinking about it i have come across with a few tips to get more of your articles with less words:

  1. If you plan to write an article and you know you have a lot to say then simply split the article, even if it is part of a series of posts;
  2. If you can’t split the article then create sub topics in your post. This way, if the readers jumps paragraphs they can focus on the sub topics they are interested;
  3. Write a nice introduction for your post, one that can grab the readers attention, making him want to read the full post.
  4. Use related images. Don’t deny the power of an image inside a post. Just remember to insert it in the right place.
  5. Don’t use a small font on your blog. It is a big mistake. Small fonts tire the reader’s eye, and it will most likely make him run away from your post/blog;
  6. Write friendly. Don’t be formal. We want the visitors awake right?;

Now, this is my opinion, and you will find some bloggers that will totally disagree with me. They defend that more detailed (meaning: big) articles will produce more and better results…

They will say that depends on the niche, and if you are on the make money online niche, then a more insightful article will produce better results. But is it really?

So, what is your opinion and experience about this?
